Big Brothers Big Sisters – Make a difference in someones life.

While I spend my life either at school or at home trying to think of a million ways to make a buck, I always try to remind myself not to become too selfish and self centered. One great way that I have found to keep myself in check and to add some adventure into my life, is to volunteer for Big Brothers Big Sisters.
I have been a Big Brother for about a year and a half and have done some very cool stuff that otherwise I wouldn’t ever thought of doing. Some of the things I have done with my Little Brother are Meeeting Bill Cosby and having steak dinner on him, Spending the day at a multi-million dollar beach front house, Touring a Air Traffic Control Tower, Getting lost in the Sierra’s(Long Story), and dropping from 150 feet in the air on a swing ride. These are all great things that were so much fun, but the real fun is the memories it created between me and a kid who needs my companionship. The feeling of making a difference in someones life is better than money or fame or any other thing. It is like raising a kid and seeing what you helped turn their life into.

My situation is unique in that my little brother has a great mother and is bound for an Ivy League school even though he is only 12. It wouldn’t appear that he would need a Big Brother, obviously there was a reason that he was accepted into the program. I can’t tell always if I have made a huge difference in his life and I am sure I never really will, but the satisfaction knowing that I may have had a big impact in his life is great.
There are so many more kids needing a mentor than there are mentors available, so I thought I would send out this message hoping to find one more person to make a difference.
Anyone can be a Big Brother or Big Sister and all it takes is a couple hours per week. Also if you know of anyone who may need a role model and mentor in their life, please contact Big Brothers Big Sisters.
