eBay makes it pretty easy for you to sell your stuff, but the big question is how good of seller are you. The mission of this article is to give a few pointers on what I believe are the top ways to improve your results.

Note that these are all important ideas and that they are not listed in order of importance. Buying something from a stranger takes a certain level of confidence in the eBay system, so to improve your eBay success you need to focus on ways to increase your potential buyers confidence.

1.) Great Pictures are a Must – Take a picture of the actual item and have the back drop of the picture contrasts the item as much as possible.
–(This is why a white background works so well) Buyer’s don’t want to see a manufacturer’s picture, because they want to see a verification of the written description. So try to take a picture similar to what a manufacturer would take, but make it your own.

2.) Say NO to Fancy templates – Don’t use the fancy templates that ebay or any other site offers.
–As a seller and a buyer, the fancy templates look like a cheesy attempt to make your item look like it is more important. Also as a buyer, I avoid pages that have fancy templates, because it makes me think of eBay stores which rarely will offer the same great prices as a random seller. Because eBay is famous for buyers getting better prices that from a retail store, you should avoid all attempts to look like a retail store. That means keep it plain, but use the techniques on this page to make your item stick out.

3.) Charge exact shipping rates
–Since this article is about building confidence, if you state in your description that you charge exact shipping rates which are $XX.XX, then the buyer feels confident that you are honest about your item and you are not looking to be a somewhat rip off.

4.) Ship the item within 24 hours of payment.
— While writing the auction description state that you will ship the item within 24 hours of pay confirmation. This makes you look like a serious seller and makes your auction desirable because the buyer will get their item sooner.

5.) Don’t be afraid to buy a sub-title
— If you item requires a large title, don’t be afraid to get a sub-title, since your first primary goal is to get the buyer to click on your auction title.

6.) Get a gallery image
— The buyer can’t see your item unless they click on the item first. Making your item equal to or higher than the other sellers items is important as long as it doesn’t cost too much.

7.) Allow Returns
— I know sellers just want to get rid of their items, but by stating that you will accept returns minus ebay and shipping fees you are increasing the confidence of your potential buyer. So do it!! Note: I have never had an item returned.

8.) Provide exceptional customer service.
— This goes along the line of shipping your item within 24 hours. To continue to build the potential buyers confidence, mention in your description “If you have any questions at all about the product don’t hesitate to email and I will get back to you within the same day. Making sure that you know exactly what you are getting, makes my life easier.”
Notice how I kept it personal, so that the buyer feels safe.

9.) Allow all types of Payment
— As nice as it is to just get paid with PayPal, some people are still old fashion and they like to send a personal check or money order. Make a note that you are willing to accept checks and money orders, but you will have to wait for the payment to clear before the item is shipped.

10.) Stress the positives just state the negatives.
— Instead of stating that your item is used and in fair condition, try to focus on the exact positives and negative of the item. For example, “this item is used and in great working condition. There are a few scratches and wear marks, but I guarantee it will work to your satisfaction.”

I agree with these tips. I find I prefer sellers whose postings are simple and seem honest (accurate postage being charged, mailed in a timely manner, etc.), and I do my best to be as such when I’m the seller.
